⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Pros: cute love story, fake dating, academic setting, Reylo fanfic
Cons: didn’t love the chapter hypotheses, kinda cheesy, stupid smut that took too long to get to
TW: sexual harassment, parent death, sex (on page)
The Love Hypothesis is the story of Olive, a Ph.D. candidate who ends up in a fake relationship. How? Great question! Olive had gone out a few times with a guy named Jeremy but it was clear to Olive that he and her best friend, Anh, would be much more suited for each other. Anh clearly had a crush on Jeremy and in order to make it crystal clear that Olive was over him and fully on board with an Anh + Jeremy equation, she told Anh she was already seeing someone else. What she didn’t expect was for Anh to show up while Olive was working alone in the lab when she was supposed to be on a date! So she did the only logical thing she could think of at the time… grab the closest guy and kiss him right in from of Anh. The closest guy just so happened to be Dr. Adam Carlsen, a dickhead professor in her department. Perfect.
I had the ebook for a while but I wasn’t dying to get into it. My friend Kaitlyn highly recommended it and that was enough for me to buy it. Reading it however, that’s a different story. However, as the blurb above states, this is Reylo fan fiction; Reylo meaning Rey and Kylo Ren from the Star Wars franchise. Once I found that out, I started reading almost immediately. I love fanfic and Star Wars so this just makes sense, scientifically. (See what I did there?)
I did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did but there were still some issues. However, in reading this, I learned a lot about myself and my romance tastes.
First of all, fanfic over everything. I am not sure why I love fanfic more than traditional romance book but if I had to guess, it would probably be due to the fact that fanfic feels more organic and believable. Plus, fanfic makes it easy to filter through and find something you are going to love based around things you already love. If you already love a story, you can guarantee there is a fanfic out there dedicated to building and exploring a relationship you didn’t get to see but definitely wanted to see. I may write an entire blog about fanfic in the future, but for now, I will leave you alone.
I really liked this book, it was cute and cheesy and kind of annoying but I still enjoyed it. I found myself giggling and shrieking all the way through which is not a look I'm proud of. I like to think I'm too cool for my shell to be shattered by such nonsense and yet... and yet.
I liked the characters, they felt real albeit a little annoying but what's more real than that? I got tired of the "he so big, me so smol" crap but it is based on Adam Driver who is a massive human so I get it I guess... at least until I FINALLY got to the smut at 70% and read this gem:
He could fit her entire breast in his mouth. All of it.
Sorry, what?! Call the police.
Aside from that bullshit, the writing was fast paced so that made it easy to read and enjoy. The story had enough to stand alone and not rely on the Reylo aspect too so don’t let Reylo be what stops you from reading it!
I liked it but that doesn't mean it's good.
I still recommend it and would love to hear your thoughts on it, good or bad!
