The Ten Thousand Doors of January - Alix E. Harrow

⭐️ ⭐️ Pros: cool premise, good main character

Cons: almost painfully slow for me, the book within a book was confusing, only started getting good near the end

TW: Self harm, Forced Institutionalization, Animal Cruelty, Racism, Classism, Blood, Violence

For the month of August, Weirdo Book Club was feeling witchy so we selected The Ten Thousand Doors of January as our alternate read. It is a low fantasy, historical fiction with flowery language and a very intriguing plot.

I really hate to say it, I hope I don't sound ridiculous, I did not enjoy this book and that kills me because I really wanted to. It has been on my TBR for so long, the cover is gorgeous, the premise sounded so cool and the main character's name is January (my birth month). I was set up for a great success here and it really fell flat. There was a pacing issue that I struggled with the most. I compared it to standing in line at the DMV in the meeting. The hyper-fixation of the color/race of everyone January met, including herself, the back and forth between the book within a book was confusing at times. Near the end of the book there are mentions of doors that lead to magical lands of dragon and flying cats, etc. but we got NONE of that in the story. I recommend watching the meeting because there were a few folks who LOVED this book and I love that for them. It just wasn't for me.

I am bummed this was was a fail for me but thankfully, some folks liked it and had a good time. If you'd like to join us for our next read, please do! You are absolutely invited and we would love to have you.
